History

The Friends of the Bear Library was formed in 1990 to raise funds to help build the Bear Library and provide a voice for the community. We were actively involved in the site selection and acquiring the land by donation.

We financed 1/3 of the $6.267 million construction cost through fund-raising and grants; New Castle County and the State of Delaware furnished the remaining 2/3 of the cost. We received funds, donations, and grants from individuals, community organizations, business entities, and foundations. We also raised funds through small fundraisers, such as used book sales, plant sales, quilt raffles, selling tiles to be decorated, bake sales, reading marathon pledges, car washes, benefit dinners, auctions, a Blue Rocks game night, and more. Operational costs were guaranteed by New Castle County and the State of Delaware.

Construction began in 1997, and the Library opened in 1998. The Library was renovated from 2011 through 2013 to expand from 15,000 sq. ft. to 25,000 sq. ft.
Bear Library is currently one of the most-used libraries in the State of Delaware!
